Counts of firs between 6" +
4 ft [feet] on millacre plots every
10 yards in straight lines N.S. [North-South] + E.W. [East-West]. also noted presence of
salal, berberis, hemlock, cedar, white
pine, huckleberry, rose
Douglas fir seedlings from 6 in [inches]
up to 3 ft [feet] are some of them
yellow green with short stiff needles,
others are dark green with long soft
needles. Usually yellow trees
occur in groups that usually
are solid of this type. Occassionally [occasionally]
there may be a single tree among
normal ones. Possibly several
different causes produce the same
result as regards visible effect on the trees
The yellow trees are browsed
little or not at all.
Browsing of fir is heaviest along
deer trails, around the edges of
clearings + rocky bluffs +
in open stands. Where trees
were growing in dense thickets
those removed from the periphery
were very little or not at all
browsed.
In the foregoing table trees are
green unless stated to be yellow, + species
other than fir are not browsed unless
so indicated by the addition of "br"
Marginalia: Key to table.
