  • a tympanic instrument the Aunkalung [Angklung] made up of 3 bamboo resonators tuned to a 3 note chord and mounted erect suspended on a frame + within each a metal striker [Drawing of angklung, with area to strike denoted] Tall projections from the frame are decorated with artificial flowers + peacock feathers. The instrument is [illegible word crossed out] vibrated in the hand; each player holding two of the instruments. 10 players made up the orchestra plus a high pitched small cymbal + a slightly larger cymbal + a double drum. The other orchestra consisted of 6 or 7 long drums a pipe a cympal [cymbal] + something else. The music was fascinating + very lively + the performers executed some most lively dance routines while they played. Another instrument used was a wind instrument called a Kan. This is not usually used in an orchestra but is a solo instrument of the countryman. From Saraburi we went on to the Buddhas Footprint shrine a very beautiful + truly amazing structure or series of structures at which we could spend only half an hour - far too short. A 30 mile drive back to- ward Bangcock [Bangkok] brought us to Bang Pa-in chu summer palace. It is essentially modern with a lot of Victorian figures ornamenting the bridges + such. In the middle of a small formal lake is a very lovely small shrine
