- Alces.
he + Foley had a big black bear run
a cow + calf right in among the
horses.
Byng Pass. Aug [August] 24-25.
Census:- Cow + yearling [male symbol] at lick here on
both days.
Lick:- A damp earth lick of small size
used by moose + caribou. Trails lead
in from all directions. Samples taken 1 Spring lick.
Predators:- Warden Mickey McGuire who
used to be on the Rocky states that
there were 6 grizzlies that used
to run almost as a group. Usually
5 together + the other not far away.
He estimated that each bear
would account for 2 moose in
the spring + 2 more in the fall.
Has seen positive evidence of the
pursuit + kill, in the spring
snow.
Wintering:- States that a few moose
winter as far up as Adolphus Lake
but most of them drop down the
Smoky in the autumn.
Calves:- [Warden Mickey] McGuire says he has seen but one calf
this year + very few mule deer fawns.
Lower Smoky Cabin. Aug. [August] 29/43. [1943]
Have noticed more moose browsing
on Balsam on Mowitch Creek, Blue Creek,
and from here to Twintree Lake than
elsewhere in the parks. Have not noticed
