Victoria, B.C. [British Columbia]
Sept. [September] 18, 1935.
All the birds noted, except the
ducks were on a high ridge
covered with fir + arbutus
The creepers as usual, confined their
activities to the heaviest growths
of fir. Nuthatches preferred the
fir but readily left it to
answer my call. Chickadees
moved freely through the
arbutus thickets. Juncos feeding
among arbutus. Squirrels were
absent from the higher ground
but abundant in the dense
second growth conifers + down timber,
at the south end of the lake.
Crossbills in small flocks
flew back + forth all day.
From here we drove to
Shawnigan Lake, then took the old
tote road past Sooke Lake + over
the summit via Jack Lake into
the Goldstream + back to Victoria
Along the shores of Sooke
Lake is one of the finest
examples of a Climax coniferous
forest in the region, we
travelled so fast that I did
not get any opportunity to
see birds until we came to
the more open young fir
on the hill top along Loon Lake
