- Hot Springs June 27/43. [1943]
In the creek bottom cedar, birch
chokeberry, dogwood, alder, willow
fir, and maple are characteristic
It is used only by deer + these are
at present eating maple, dogwood +
willow quite extensively.
The winter browsing of fir +
juniper indicates a serious overgrazing.
Then hiked up Mackay Creek
for about 3 1/2 to 4 miles.
Heavily vegetated with some
assemblage as along Sinclair
but forb + grass ground cover
+ spirea more abundant.
At head of valley S [South] + W [West] facing
hills are open with small
timber clumps + good pastures
to the tops - scattered crags + cliffs
render this superior sheep
summer range + doubtless
explains why sheep exist in
the region, a mystery to me
on the basis of the winter range.
It seems to me that the present
condition of the sheep band may
warrant local predator control
supplemented by a closed season
in the region just outside the park.
There is evidence of moose + possibly
a very few deer + elk wintering up
Mackay Creek. Grizzly + black bear sign
Marginalia: Continued on next p. [page]
