June 28/43 [1943] Census [underlined] Today between Kootenay Crossing + Blacks Camp saw:- 1 [female symbol] 1 calf 1 [male symbol] 1 [male symbol] 1 [female symbol] 1 calf 3 [female symbol] 1 calf at lick. Accidents [underlined]:- [Warden J.J.] Meredith reports 3 occurrences of calf killing by what were deemed to be barren cows. One instance was witnessed + photographed. Condition [underlined]: The barren [female symbol]'s at the lick were in noticeably better condition than were the [female symbol]'s with calves. Sawback L. [lake] [underlined] July 2/43 [1943]. Heavy moose wintering on upper 40 mile Tall willow + birch used 80% +,- balsam browsed fairly heavily. Spring work around Sawback L. [lake] not tall enough willows for winter use Census. 2 mile L.
