Maria Cleofa to Maria Magdalena Mar [March] 6/62.
09:30-12:00.
Dolphins:- A large school of dolphins was seen about
a mile of [off] the N.W [northwest] corner of Cleofa. They were
proceeding lazily, apparently feeding. I got
an excellent view of about 30 of them
alongside the ship. Length I judge 6' 5' [number crossed out]
snout long + slender with grayish white tip.
Body color all over mottled, dark olive grey + pale gray
or whitish; light line beginning over eye
+ sweeping backward along the side becoming
less obvious + disappearing about mid body.
Underparts paler. Dorsal short, sharply
falcate. No bright color anywhere, most
prominent marks were stripes over eye
for 12" to 18" and snout tip.
Whales:- 8 whales - one group of 4 + 2 pairs.
Color mottled greyish, spout high + single,
dorsal ridge pronounced; movements lazy
dorsal fin prominent, falcate; underside
of flukes exposed slightly in diving. Two
seen clearly, one had a pair of white
areas contrasting with under color +
symmetrically placed one beneath each tail fin
on the fluke. The other was almost
the same but more diffuse. Pectorals
not seen, no light areas otherwise noticed
Seemed to me like Calif [California] Grey whale.
