  • Odocoileus hemionus Banff, Alta. [Alberta] June 2/43 [1943] Counted 15 deer on Norquay - [Warden Bruce] Mitchell counted 21 the other day. All those seen today were feeding on new growth well below the meadow. Probably the snow drove them down again. " [Banff, Alberta] June 3/43 [1943] In drive to Boom Cr. [creek] saw just 2 deer + those at 2.5 mile Moult No sign of moulting yet. [Warden Bruce] Mitchell tells me doe has triplets in Banff. Carrot Cr. [creek], Banff Pk. [Park] June 4/43. [1943] Kills. Found front leg of a predator kill on the west sidehill near camp. Apparently a young deer but we could not find the rest of the kill. May have been coyote or cougar. Minnewanka Cabin. June 6/43 [1943] Saw 5 does + 1 buck, all old stock. Food:- Watched these deer feeding for over 1/2 hour. They fed [word written over another illegible word] about 90% on the pink vetch (or Hedysarum) and quite extensively on the other vetch-like plants. About 8% on grass + 2% on aspen leaves. All feeding low down Moult. One moulting heavily, one moderately others not noticeably. it circled us + came down on the trail again. Saw one buck travelling along S [south] side.
