Alta Lake, B.C. [British Columbia]
Sept. [September] 7-8/42 [1942] Journal
On 7 saw a single herring gull,
2 pileated woodpeckers, 3 R.b. [Red-breasted] sapsuckers,
shot 2 pigmy owls + heard a third. In the
late evening a Spotted Owl [underlined] called
steadily for almost half an hour
from across the lake, i.e. West side,
opposite the cabin. Two horned owls
called intermittently. 1 Yellowthroat heard
+ several Macgillivray warbler.
On 8th a pigeon hawk chased a
group of 8 northern Phalarope down
the lake, it struck at one in
half-hearted fashion + then gave up
the chase.
Sept. [September] 9/42. Spotted owl calling again tonight from down
near the Nita Lake rock cut. Called 3 times
at considerable intervals. Saw several
Lincoln Sparrows two young or [female symbol]
hooded mergansers, 1 herring gull juv. [juvenile]
several winter wrens, juncos, varied
thrush, robins, song sparrows, 2 herons
1 horned owl. Heard a pigmy owl. 3 Holboell
grebes + at least one loon - an ad. [adult] present
on the lake. Audubon warblers abundant.
Saw a large black bear near Archibald's
clearing at 5 P.M.
5 +/- Evening Grosbeak, several cedar waxwings
a Clarkes crow + some pipits seen.
