- region impresses me as being stocked
as heavily as is desirable during winter
months.
Further up the sidehills the pine is
in a dense stand to a height of
about 20' + is almost useless as a
game range.
By observation of this area in comparison
with the 1926 burn between Kootenay
crossing + the Vermilion [Vermiliion] it appears
that for the first 15 to 25 years -
depending on growth conditions a
burn becomes good game range
then if pine is the dominant producer
it becomes progressively less useful
until at 26 to 30 years it
is almost useless. The stand
then thins out + develops a
heavier ground cover of shrubs
forbs + grasses + is useful summer
ground for deer, elk + bear.
while the wet spots winter a few
moose. The wintering value of
the mature pine forest is
very low. It in turn gets bug
killed + gives rise to a climax
spruce forest unless burning
intervenes. The latter has about
the same range value as the
mature pine stand.
