  • Banff; Alta. [Alberta] Alces April 25/43 [1943] moose. One [illegible word crossed out] of which I found only the foot had the metacarpals hypertrified [hypertrophied] + arthritic. Food. [underlined] Found 2 cast antlers both chewed by either moose or elk. Banff. April 26/43 [1943] Up the Spray to 15 mile cabin there are lots of moose. Only two fresh tracks but pellets equalled those of elk + we saw 80 of them. Found the ancient remains of a moose cow cleaned up by bear. Willows heavily browsed but little killing. Track of a running moose measured 11 1/2 " [inches] x 6" [inches] [drawing of moose hoofprint denoting dimensions] Banff. April 27/43 [1943] Saw 1 cow, 1 calf and 5 bulls up the Cascade Valley as far as the 15 mile cabin. Warden E. [Ernest] Stenton saw 25 moose in the valley above the Stony Cr. [creek] Bridge on 1 day this winter (December) The calf had a large rubbed patch on its left shoulder (ticks?) Browse (willow + dwarf birch) in valley. is moderately used + in good condition; apart from the above calf all moose were in A1 shape. no antlers. Banff. April 28/43 [1943] Sign of at least 2 moose on the lower end of the Carrot Cr. [creek] + at least 2 more on Mt. Norquay.
