In its 2,500-year history, this gentle and peaceable religious tradition developed highly sophisticated philoso�phies and became a potent civilizing force in the Far East. Buddhism arrived relatively late in Japan�around ad 552. It came to Japan via China and Korea, and it was largely a sinicized form of Mahayana which became popular. However, it soon took on a flavour that was uniquely Japanese. The spread of Buddhism in Asia resulted in a vast diffusion of texts, paint�ings, sculptures, ritual objects, etc. In this publication we have chosen to examine one small aspect of Buddhist art, the Buddhist monks' mantles or robes of Japan known as kesa.
