Westwick Lake Monday Aug [August] 22. Weather: fine with thunder clouds Rode over to Onward Ranch this afternoon. There was practically no life evident in the timber, but we saw 3 mallards (?) on a small slough. Onward Ranch Tuesday, Aug. [August] 23. Weather: fine in the AM. [morning], cloudy in the afternoon, rain in the evening. I saw several small hawk- like birds sitting on a fence - probably Sparrow hawks - by Sugarcane reservation Nancy [Mahoney] rode on the ranger all day and remarked on how few birds were in evidence. At Jones Lake she saw 2-3 Buteos and half a dozen Sparrow hawks, and on the range, a few Vesper sparrows, and that was all.
