Found a Northern Ravens nest [underlined]. We
were led to this nest by the cries of
the youngsters that we heard from about
1/4 mile distant + above the roar of the
surf. There appeared to be 2 or 3 young
in the nest one of which we succeeded
in shooting from the nest by dint
of exploding one side of the nest with
a heavy charge of no. 4 shot.
Took a Peromyscus + a spruce in
traps set through the woods. The
Pery. [Peromyscus] has a very dark dorsal stripe
but the stripe is more confined than
in those we took at Tofino.
In the afternoon packed our duffel
+ rowed back to Tofino in about
3 hours - slightly less. Started to
rain + blow a brisk S. [South] Easter.
May 16. [1931] Skinned our catch of
yesterday and cleaned up the
cabin in the morning. In
the afternoon Mr [Kenneth] Racey went
in to Tofino while I set out a line
of traps down the road. Judging
by the sign I should say that this
country was a washout so far
as small mammals are concerned
All muskeg or thick cedar
+ salal + always wet underneath
Saw a flock of 5 curlew, Shot
a single Stellers Jay [underlined].
Rain all day
