- the rise + blow again. What was apparently
the large of the two whales would raise
his whole fluke out of the water every time
he rose to blow even when he was not
sounding after every blow. Set traps on Campania
in the evening + found a small lake with
an old beaver dam at the lower end. In it
were two Hooded mergansers. Squirrels very
abundant + exceptionally noisy for coastal
squirrels.
Aug [August] 15. [1939] Skinned out our catch in the morning + then
Ran down the Channel to Colby Bay on Banks
Island. Saw several schools of Porpoise but did
not succeed in catching any.
Aug [August] 16. [1939] Spent the day skinning + then took a long
hike in the interior of Banks. I collected a male
Lincoln Sparrow in a Beaver meadow. Ran down
to the North end of Banks.
Aug [August] 17-20. [1939] Spent on the north end of Banks I. [Island]
"Larsen Hr [Harbour]" Shorebirds quite abundant. Collected
two Dowichers [Dowitcher]. Saw numbers of Least + Western Sandpiper
Sanderling + a flock of eight Greater Yellow Legs.
On the outside Rocks I saw a flock of approx [approximately] 18-20
Turnstones which hung around the rocks upon
which was a flock of about twenty Oyster
Catchers. Crossing to Beaver Pass we saw large
numbers of Phalaropes + one being pursued,
unsuccessfully, by a Falcon. Also saw a
porpoise rise twice ahead of the boat but it
was too choppy to pursue him.
