[Peter] Fords.
July 20 Down to London with Ann [Cowan] + Garry [Cowan].
July 21. Left London for Southampton on the
11:30 from Waverly [Waverley]; lunched on the train
+ arrived at 1:20.
Went out to the University of Southampton
to see Professor [John] Raymont, of the dept [department] of zoology.
They have an excellent new building, red
brick, well designed + equipped. They spent
more on the equipment than on the structure.
A small lab [laboratory] houses the honours students.
about 6 of them; Another is devoted to Physiology
+ a larger one to the 1st and 2nd years of zoology.
Raymont himself is working on the
nutrition + respiration of plankton both
phyto [phytoplankton] + zoo [zooplankton] + has a physical set up to do very
nice work. At the moment he is just beginning
a controlled study of the use of chemical fertilizers
by plankton. In a series of tanks he
plans to add the experimental substances,
watch the results + achieve quantitative expulsion
by straining out all the organisms + analyzing
them for comparison with the quantities of
materials added. He also has some experiments
going to investigate the variations in annual.
