- Shomburgk's [Schomburgk's] deer used to be
abundant + unique in central
Thailand + is now gone. Elds
deer seriously reduced.
Java rhino + 2 horned rhino
almost gone. Gaur + Banteng
at the vanishing point, the
Couprey [Kouprey] gon [gone] except in Cambodia
Nov [November] 24. [1957]
All day field trip. Busses left
the hotel at 6:45 so we rose at 5:30,
had breakfast in our rooms + left.
13 busses - 2 for Botany the rest for the
general excursion. We drove N. [north] to
our first stop at Lobpuri [Lopburi] where
there were some fascinating old Khmer
ruins said to be at least 400 years
old. These are the ruins of a
Wat with 2 of the phallic
towers (Prang?) still standing +
still showing some of their
intricate ornamentation. I took
several photographs of this.
At the same place one old
column had been surrounded
by a relatively modern temple
to Vishnu. Inside this was
a standing image of this god
covered with small bits of gold
leaf. This gold leaf is bought
at the sight [site] and placed upon
the image at the site of any
discomfort. While we watched
an old lady placed a piece on
the lower right abdomen -
appendix or ovary? There
were a couple of dozen
crab eating Macaques wandering
around the mound.
We then drove several miles
back along the highway
+ visited the new resevoir [reservoir]
of [word crossed out] (Sublek [Sub Lek] Resevoir [Reservoir]) of Saraburi
Settlement. We had no time
to look around but had
to go on (already 1 hour late)
to lunch at the very fine
community Hall. Here we
were royally entertained
by 2 children dancing in
formal Thai costume, a
group of young people executing
a dance the Ranwong, 2
orchestras on playing
