- On board USS Cassin. [SS Cassiar]
July 31/46. Q.C. [Queen Charlotte] Sound.
Yesterday evening off Redfern + Pine
islands saw 40 or 50 Calif. [California] Murres
both adults + apparent young, About
the same number of Rhino. [Rhinoceros] Auklets
many of them with a silvery
fish in their beaks. Heard some
marbled murrelets but did not see
them. A dozen or so Pigeon guillemots
and the same number of Tufted
Puffin. Many phalaropes - apparently
red phalaropes + one flock of
western sandpipers seen.
Watched a Peale's falcon pick a
phalarope off the water.
This morning in Q.C. [Queen Charlotte] sound
saw 7 sooty Albatross at one
time, 1 fulmar, 1 sooty shearwater
several petrels of both species,
1 rhino [rhinoceros] auklet, 1 tufted puffin
+ 1 young Peales Falcon.
Mr. Vic Heath tells me that on the
mainland near the Entrance to Simoom
Sound there is a vertical rock face
supporting a gull colony.
There is a rock off Entrance Island
on way into Pacofi that has a gull colony.
Watched an Eagle lift a young gull from it
Reef Isl. [Island] looks very good for Perys [Peromyscus].
Good camp ground (apparently) on N.E. [northeast] corner
Seal Isl [Island] - about 5 acres, well timbered.
