June 30 [1967] contd [continued]
Was driven by Bob Bradley. We saw the usual Impala
Zebra, gnu, giraffe, wildebee [word crossed out], Congoni [kongoni] + gazelles also 2 large +
somewhat infirm male lions. Several good male Defassa
waterbuck interested me particularly. A very distinctive
animal with a fair range of habitat as we saw them both
in riparian growth + out on the grassland. One bush
buck gave us a fleeting glimpse. A troop of baboon yielded
pictures.
Bristols [Foster] car came upon a lion + lioness on a kill that was
just about stripped. No knowing whether they had killed it but
they were not obviously full fed. While they watched the lioness
started to stalk a gnu half a mile away across the valley. She
moved only when its head was down + got to perhaps 30
yds [yards] away. The gnu then made the mistake of lying down to
dustbath. She was on him in a flash, seized the nose [?]
+ hung on. The gnu managed to get to its feet with the
lion hanging limply + even upside down. By this
time the car had closed in close so that all details
could be seen. The lioness appeared not to exert
any force to throw its prey or tug at it - It merely
hung on. In a few minutes the gnu died of asphyxiation
but she remained doggedly gripping for another 5
minutes. Then she let go + began inspecting her
prey. The lion arrived + also inspected.
We returned a few minutes later + the two
had just finished the viscera. The paunch contents
