Carrot Creek. June 5/43. [1943]
No moose in here. A little sign
up as far as 2 or 3 miles but
none at all up this far.
When [Ernest] Stenton patrolled this
in the month of February the
crest of the east ridge + all the
E [East] facing bluffs near camp here
were snow free. He saw
from 50-75 sheep on the West
side. There is much travel back
+ forth as witnessed by many
crossing trails. All lion kills
with one exception were in the
river bottoms - + in spite of
the fact that we spent much
more time high up than low
down. Today, snow notwithstanding,
we worked from the summit
all the way along the west
side of the valley.
By glass it can be seen that
the E [East] side is networked with
trails - even more so than
the west.
A party bringing horses down
the creek about 2 weeks ago
saw a lion right on the trail
[Ernest] Stenton saw tracks of 3 or 4
in February. Including positive
evidence that a single animal moving
up the creek had killed at least
