- May 4/53 [1953] Attended Royal Soc. [Society] Lecture by Max [Maxwell John] Dunbar.
He gave a rather offhand account of his 5
years work in the eastern arctic. Apparently
it has so far been almost entirely exploratory
work.
May 5/53 [1953]. Glasgow. Had a session with C.M. [Charles Maurice] Yonge
+ met a student Invertebrate Zoologist by the name of Clarke
who is going to Friday Harbour this summer.
[Charles Maurice] Yonge suggests J. [John] A. Allen [underlined], an assistant with his
B.Sc. [Bachelor of Sciences] Honours London + Southampton, working toward a
London PhD. Assistant at Millport 1 year,
interest is in Mollusca. Paper on Nucula published
in Plymouth Journal. Has Roy. Soc [Royal Society] Fellowship +
has studied in Medit. [Mediterranean], at Roscoff + now West Indies.
Will be back in June.
Also says Digby is a very poor lecturer
but that R Bainbridge, Cambridge might do.
Visited Rock Garden exhibition then drove out
to Loch Lomond Research Station with Young [Charles Maurice Yonge] + a
Dr Jacks? lecturer. Here 23 miles from the
University they have a small but well equipped
fresh water station. All the necessary equipment
for underwater temperature, bottom sampling
dredging, towing. 3 dingies, 2 outboards, a 30'
cabin boat that cost about L [pounds] 700 equipped
with electric winches etc. [etcetera] Another boat is for
