- afternoon. Had dinner down
town + came home about 8.
At the zoo noted a few facts
of interest.
Hippo [double underline] [Hippopotamus] Female with calf
a month old - She has calved
1930, 32 [1932], 34 [1934], 36 [1936], 38 [1938], 40 [1940], 42 [1942], 44 [1944], 46 [1946],
48 [1948], 49 [1949], 51 [1951], 53 [1953], 56 [1956], 59 [1959], 61 [1961].
It would be useful to know
whether she had had a chance to
mate every year but had not done
so, or whether she comes in heat
only every 2nd [second] year. If this is so
did she lose her calf in 1948?
Cervus axis [underlined] :- the stag has hard
antlers + was actively attempting
copulation with a doe not quite
ready to stand. Twice he was
on the point of entering when
she moved away. There were
fawns in the pen that were
not more than 3 months old.
Courtship on part of the [male symbol] consisted
of licking the vulva (4 times), gentle horning
of the rear (twice); attempted
mounting 12-14 times in 15 minutes
The doe responded to licking
by raising the tail + standing still
until mounting was attempted.
May 19/62 [1962]
The only other courtship behaviour
seen on part of the doe, was
one playful prance, ending
with head extended + rubbed
lengthways down the chest + belly
of the male.
Among the birds seen the
Hanging parrots (Loriculus) +
the mousebirds were the most
interesting.
One adult + 12 yearling
muskox present, 6 polar bears.
Owls:- Eagle owl with
3 young, Horned owl with one
young, snowy + great grey on
nests on the ground.
