Jasper, Alta [Alberta]: April 17/43.[1943]
Saw plenty of moose sign in
the willows bordering the S [south] side
of the river at Jacques creek. Saw
a single yng [young] bull at mile 24.
Predators:- Frank Wells thinks that the
grizzlies are the cause of most moose
deaths. Says he has seen about 60 kills
he ascribes to grizzlies. Reported that
one of the other wardens [space left blank, underlined]
had watched a large bull moose
rush into the lake pursued by two
grizzlies - one of them went into
the water after him while the
other stayed on the shore. THe moose
fought off the bear successfully
by striking with his fore feet.
While hunting for grizzly
cubs at the mouth of the Rocky last
year he saw a very large bear
enter some bush - shortly after
a cow moose was seen swimming
straight down the middle of
the Athabasca + another was standing
in the water up to its neck.
He felt that the bear was responsible
for the strange action of these
moose.
