I find that a PhD can be obtained in a
minimum of 2 years + that there is a tendency,
particularly with foreign (Indian) students to
hurry them through in that time as they lose
face in India if they take longer. The result
has been a let down of standards. It is
most interesting to hear the men complaining
about the inability of the candidates to
write English + the many trials of thesis
correcting + teaching English as you go
through a PhD first draft. It sounds
just like the common U.B.C. [University of British Columbia] lament.
Here they blame disgruntled school teachers
who have all been 'leveled out' in salary
I wonder if they failing is real or whether
we are not just getting too many students
through a coarser meshed screen. Perhaps
it is our own standards of admission that
are to blame.
Apparently university enrollments doubled
here after the war + about the same number
of places are still being opened but so few
applicants are coming forward that there is
virtually no selection + standards have dropped.
This has been particularly striking in medicine
+ dentistry
The men here look upon Canada as the
one desireable [desirable] blace [place] in the Commonwealth for
