  • Journal. Banff. Alta. [Alberta] June 8/43 [1943] Today went up the Jasper highway as far as 107 mile. Bruce Mitchell + Ernest Young accompanied me as far as Saskatchewan where I met the warden Wm. [William] Matthews The weather was excellent all day with scattered altus clouds + a west wind of 5 mph [miles per hour]. Leaving Louise the road climbs rapidly to Bow Summit where the country is open spruce + subalpine meadowland or muskeg. it there passes downgrade through pine + spruce woods to the Saskatchewan where some open benches partly the result of a recent fire + a small area. of aspen woodland exists For almost 10 miles on each side of the river crossing the country is reported to have a very light snowfall - it thus constitutes a winter game range of some importance. Above the crossing the river parallels the road [illegible word crossed out] through a wide flat sometimes gravelly, sometimes marshy valley bottom. The marshes are rich in Carex [underlined] etc [etcetera] + are bordered with spruce muskeg, giving way to spruce forests where soil
