- plowing a ditch every 20' + using the peaty
sod to make 4 rows of overturned sods 5 1/2'
apart. At planting each sod is incised from
the side, the seedling placed in the crack so
that the roots project below, + the sod is
replaced on the ground. This technique
reduces weeding problems, provides some
manuring action of decaying veg. [vegetation] around the
roots + works well. In some other types
they are planting in plowed furrows +
they are not sure how the roots will
stand up to wind action later.
Preparation costs L [pounds] 10 per acre, the stock of L [pounds] 10
per acre + planting L [pounds] 3-5 ".
Damage from disease has been negligible
I note a lot of aphis on the spruce just now
+ causing twisted branchlets. The young
spruce I saw today were from Graham Isl. [Island] [British Columbia]
seed but did not look too robust.
Animal damage is a problem. Rabbits are
fenced out, black game favor larch areas
+ eat the terminal buds with relish, heavy
concentrations of caper [capercaillie] do some damage to
P. [Pinus] sylvestris but such instances are rare.
Roe do a lot of damage + a new
German deterrent [illegible name] is being tried
Apparently it is widely used in Germany
