Station Maria Magdalena Isl. [Island] Mex. [Mexico] Mar [March] 7/62. [1962]
Leaving the E [east] sandspit + walking S.W [southwest] along
the beach you pass a small area of rocks
about 2-300 yrd [yards] along. This is followed by
a sandy bay of 1-200 yds [yards] then an
extensive area of sandstone slabs of
2 colors runs all the way to the point
- with variations when there is a shelving
rocky beach + some coral at low
levels much of it dead.
The richest area is close to the
junction of the bay with the sandstone
Here I took 3 species of Cypraea. One of the
C. [Cypraea] cervinetta is in active growth + very fragile.
Also taken were 12 Astraea olivacea,
2 Astraea unguis, [underlined] 3 of many Turbo.
2 or 3 small cones, an abundance of
Patella mexicana, 2 apparently giant
Siphonaptera but may be Patella [underlined]
Where flat rocks were embedded in the
sand 2 chitons were abundant + with
them frilled clam + some small thin
bivalves, Pyrene major + strombiformus
abundant, others rare. Only 1 mitra
taken. Under rocks also the slender, smooth
grayish asteroid, the crabs were rare + of
poor variety compared with the great
abundance on the coral rubble flat on
Cleofa.
Around the point in the heavy
rock rubble facing S [south] is a very
