See journal for [James (Jim)] Simpsons notes on
numbers.
Cairn Cabin. Aug [August] 3/43 [1943],
Today examined E [east] slopes of Mt [Mount] Southesk
from cabin as far north as the S. [south] slope
of Southesk Cairn. This is typical ram
summer range + gives little evidence
of being able to winter many sheep.
Census:- 50 ewes + 78 rams.
These were distributed as follows.
12 ad [adult] + 3 yearling [female symbol]'s
5 ewes + 5 2 year old rams.
27 rams 3 yrs [years] + up.
13 " " "
15 " " "
10 " " "
30 ewes + 2 2 yr [year] old rams
6 rams
We were up close to all these
but 16 of the rams. In the groups
examined carefully there were some
fine heads but none that impressed
me as being over 40 inches.
Kills:- Found remains of 2 lambs dead
in their first winter - No evidence of
cause of death
Disease:- 1 ewe with pure white face was
very old + obviously in poor condition, long
tags of old hair clung to her all over
Color:- Tremendous variation. Among the big
ewe band the leader was as dark as
