no attention to the does but
engaged in some pushing matches
with the spike buck. The
neck of the spike is not
swollen, but was slightly
so two weeks back.
Mr Dunning has seen no
actual matings. He reports that
one of the does came into heat in her first fall
Injuries [underlined] This buck was injured
over the right eye while
fighting + has developed a
large wart on the site of
the injury - see photos.
Antlers. [underlined] The fork was fed milk
daily until 18 mos [months] old + at
that time grew a pair of
forked antlers instead of
spikes. These he held until
early May.
Food. [underlined] All these deer were eating
leaves of Broad leafed maple
+ alder that had freshly
fallen in preference to other
wild food. They did not touch
nettles, + but little utilization
had been made of the sword
ferns. Black raspberry + Red huckleberry was avidly
eaten. Preference was for the maple.
