to Boulters to write a few letters. Later drove
10 miles out of town to a dead end side
road towards saltchuck. Stunted forested
country. Each set 60 traps. Rain in evening
May 8. [1961]
Couldn't arise until 8. After a burnt barn
breakfast found in traps: 6 Sorex [underlined], 3 Peri [Peromyscus] [underlined], 2 Cleth. [Clethrionomys] [underlined]
Left traps out. Skinned all morning
Collected inverts. [invertebrates] around camp in pm [afternoon], later
going to town to shop. Boulter's for supper.
In muskeg pond Mike [Bigg] found fist size
mass of eggs, containing perhaps 50 well devel-
oped eggs looking salamander like.
Blue Grouse hooting in evening. had 2 juv [juvenile]
eagles above camp, 1 arctic loon calling, hermit
+ varied thrushes common, golden crowned sparrows
numerous in scrub around camp.
May 9
Our 120 traps, in same spots as last night
caught only 1 sorex [underlined]. Tried running down a
hooting grouse, but got discouraged after a battle
with devil's club. Moved camp a few miles
farther out to where the "Cellunese" have built
a campsite on a bay at saltchuck
Hunted for invertebrates, then set out about
120 traps.. (Mike [Bigg]'s at high tide level + likely to
disappear.). Gloriously sunny afternoon
while we hear of Vancouver being washed out.
Shot + skinned 2 [female symbol] stetter's [steller's] jays (456, 457)
May 10. A bright, clear, morning. In our traps:- 5 Peri [Peromyscus] [underlined],
1 Cleth [Clethrionomys] [underlined], 8 Sorex v. [vagrans] [underlined], 2 Sorex [underlined] c. [cinereus]. Skinned in morning
hunted for inverts [invertebrates] in afternoon. Had a clam
dig + excellent feed of clams (pressure cooked).
Finished in stream in evening. Beautiful
pools, famous for steelhead: caught 1 nice
cuthroat.
May 11
Dull. In traps: 8 S. [Sorex] vagrans, [underlined] 3. S. [Sorex] cinereus [underlined]
1 S. [Sorex] palustris [underlined], 2 Peri [Peromyscus] [underlined], 1 Microtus [underlined], Skinned
in morning, collected inverts [invertebrates] in pm [evening].
May 12
Rain all day. Walked up Kloiya Ck [Creek] to dam.
Found quite a few fingerlings killed below dam.
Have been trying for Hairy woodpeckers without
success. Shot + skinned another Steller's Jay
and a G.C. [Golden-crowned] Sparrow (#469 470)
Picked up Wilf Schofield at bus stop in
Rupert, to Boulter's for an excellent halibut
supper. Returned to Kloiya Bay picnic site.
