March 7/62 [1962] On the way back along the beach
on the steep grass + Opuntia slopes below the
shear s [south] facing cliffs I encountered a large
mixed flock of orioles + cardinals. They
were working in the bases of agave +
cactus. Here [female symbol]'s seemed to outnumber
[male symbol]'s. I shot 2 [female symbol]s of each species. These
were the only birds in this ecotype
except for a single sparrowhawk. This is
where I saw the hawk last time too.
March 8, 1962 Maria Magdalena Isl. [Island]
Mexico
Today went ashore with Wally [Wallace McCutcheon] + Larry [Harry Meredith]
who were gong to show me where the spring
was. Somehow we got separated + I, thinking
they were going up the main arroyo, went
up it for 2 3/4 hours + for a distance of
perhaps 4 miles. Went through quite a
spectacular canyon en route.
Saw 6 deer + shot 1 old buck. The
avifauna was abundant today. On the
beach were 6 caracara, in the beach
shrubbery the grey headed flycatcher was
reasonably abundant - Again the
Parula, wren, woodpecker, + oriole
were all in habitats. The yellow
vireo in the forest habitat. The becard
was seen only in the higher forest, the
grey headed flycatcher was also all the way.
