- Arctic Tern.
55 mi [miles] N.W. [northwest] Aklavik. June 25, 1947.
Found our first tern nest today.
It consisted of a shallow cup of
sedges + other dryish marsh vegetation
about 10 in. [inches] in diameter + elevated
1 1/2 inches above the summit of
the old swan's nest upon which it
was built. The two fresh eggs
were being incubated at the time
+ the male was sitting alongside
the female.
Aklavik. July 6, 1947
4 miles up the Peel from here on
the west bank I today found 4 terns
nests in about 100 yds. [yards] each nest
was built close up against the
same river ridge - now 100 +/-
from the waters edge, each was
a shallow depression with a few bits
of dead equisetum as a lining and
3 contained 2 eggs each, the 4th a
2 or 3 day old chick + 1 egg.
This is certainly a highly vulnerable
place to nest - Any prowling
carnivore could destroy every
nest.
