are distributed more abundantly in the
grass around the gardens + buildings
than elsewhere but we have
taken them in the climax forest
+ in the chaparal [chaparral].

Traps took Rattus rattus 5, Rattus alexandrinus
2, Peromyscus 3 (1 ad [adult]), Sorex 7. (2 ad. [adults]). 90
traps.
Took a young heron + another grouse +
spent most of the day skinning. In
evening saw another bat but could
not get it.
" Aug. [August] 14/1946.
Traps took 2 hybrid rats, 2 Sorex (1 ad [adult]);
+ 1 Rattus rattus. Took a short
jaunt in the boat in an attempt
to get one of the rhinoceros auklets
that are feeding in the bay just
now. The boat is a wreck +
would be unsafe out of the
bay but can be used for
short jaunts in here.
In afternoon Charlie [Charles J. Guiguet] left to explore
the east coast. He hopes to reach
+ trap High Island bay or the next
large bay south of there. He
will stay out overnight + come in
tomorrow. I then left at 3 PM + travelled
west a mile or so then took an
