- Cowichan Lake, B.C. [British Columbia] Feb. [February] 7, 1940.
Antlers. Of 12 bucks seen today 7 had shed
their antlers, one had only a single
antler, another shed one as we
watched + three others had
antlers still on.
It is remarkable that
neither last week nor this
have any spike bucks or small
forks been seen. All those
had shed before Jan. [January] 31. Those
seen today were all big bucks
one of them was perhaps the
largest buck have seen on
V.I. [Vancouver Island], with 5X5 or better +
vert tall antlers another was
a very large 3 point with brow
points.
While I was watching one old
buck through the telescope at
8:25 A.M. he shed one antler. His
antics were remarkable. When
first seen he was standing on
the alarm, warned by the flight
of a doe. After standing still
for 15 min. [minutes] he became quiet
+ trotted off up hill. As he went
he kept his head inclined toward
the right + flourished like a
frisky calf. After going 50 yards
he again stopped + gazed carefully
