- Journal May 13/44. [1944]
the province despite the abundance of wolves.
Jasper. May 14/44. [1944]
Left town at 10 AM - brilliant sunshine
light west wide - + hiked down the
buffalo prairie trail to about half a
mile beyond Wabasso Lakes. The area
is an interesting one, considerable old
burn grown up to open stands of
Jack pine + aspen + a brush flora dominated
by Shepherdia [underlined] - On certain of the ridges
Douglas fir forms a consocies. The
terrain is rough, a contained series of
rocky ridges roughly parallel the Athabasca
river. Between many of the ridges sloughs
+ creeklets that have been dammed to
form beaver ponds of considerable area.
The grass on the open west facing
slopes is predominantly Koeleria [underlined] but
certain of the other characteristic species
are present in lesser amounts. From
a grazing standpoint the area is
heavily overstocked but browse conditions
are better than they are further down
the Athabasca valley. There has been
extensive local damage to small
aspens by breaking them down
but there is not the extensive barking
nor is there a browse line.
Census Elk 11 tracks of mink, Lynx
Sheep 55. + grizzly at Tekarra Creek.
