- Foreword
Over the years the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria has been very pleased to be able to develop a strong collection of Japanese art, and one which has great depth in its holdings of Japanese prints. On a number of occasions we have been able to present these works in special exhibitions, at times focusing on the prints alone, and at others in connection with other forms of artistic expression within particular time frames. We have also looked at the connections of East and West, and it is in the work of the artists of the shin hanga prints that this East / West link is perhaps the most evident. To see our own Niagara Falls and other North American spots depicted in Japanese prints underlines the real interest of the Japanese artists in the West, an interest which is also seen in the art of the West of places in the East.
This publication, the second in our recent series of The Gallery Collects, explores and examines the import of the work of the shin hanga artists and does so in the context of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria's own collection. In being able to present this work I would like to extend the thanks of the Gallery to all the donors who have contributed to the collection, making this publication possible in the first place. I would also like to thank and congratulate Barry Till, Curator of Asian Art for his knowledge and steering of this publication. His eye and his gift of sharing his knowledge is much appreciated.
To George and Lola Kidd I would like to give special thanks. Their support and generosity to the collection and activities of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria has been warmly given over many years, and the recent additional support for this Gallery Collects series of publications is very much appreciated by all. The Kidds also donated works to our shin hanga collection. Thank you for this assistance, and for that given in so many other ways.
