ABSTRACT: Interview With Rear Admiral Ken Summers Interviewer Jonathon Wolsey November 14th 2007, Victoria B.C. Minutes 170 Ken Summers was born in St. Thomas, Ontario in 1944, began career as an Officer Cadet at Royal Roads and graduated from the Royal Military College Kingston Ontario in 1967. He Specialized in Operations and joined the commissioning crew of HCMCS Iroquois as Operation Officer. He Served as Executive Officer HMCS Athabasca and as commanding officer of HMCS Algonquin. In 1990 assumed command of the Canadian Naval Task Group ordered to the Persian Gulf. Talks of being asked to take command, and goes through the many steps in which to prepare for deployment to the Gulf. Talks about having new officers starting their first few months in the Gulf, having to chose the ships needed and also talking about the atmosphere on the ship and the crew doing all it can to see the deadline for the ships met. Talks about the coalition role and Canada's Role. Talks about the media and the good and bad that they contributed to the war. Talks about the preparation for the Gulf with HMCS Frasier and also the French Air Force. Once reached the Gulf, talks of being appointed commander of Canadian Forces in the Middle East and establishing his joint Headquarters in Bahrain. Talks about HMSC Protecteur and sending the crew home and having HMCS Oasis take over the command of the HMSC Protecteur. Talks about the mission being over and when he left and then explains the why the Gulf was important not only the Navy but to the Canadian Forces and how it paved the way to how operations are conducted today.
