Material features an interview with Lorna Wanosts’a7 Williams for Survival International conducted by Gary Marcuse in Vancouver, B.C. Some questions are based on those provided by anthropologist Hugh Brody and Jo Woodman of Survival International for a proposed film about the impact of contemporary residential schools in India and Africa. In part 1, Wanosts’a7 discusses what residential school systems are; the history and purpose of residential schools in Canada; the connection between colonialism and residential schools; her personal residential school experience; and the impact that residential schools have had on children, families, communities, culture, and language across generations. In part 2, Wanosts’a7 discusses her feelings on the continued existence of residential schools in other parts of the world; the relation between residential schools and the exploitation of resources on land inhabited by Indigenous peoples; and the importance of sharing Indigenous experiences of residential schools. Wanosts’a7 continues with a message to activists working to stop residential schools; and gives her perspective on the pace of progress in rectifying the damage of residential schools, particularly in the context of impending environmental crisis. In part 3, Wanosts’a7 provides a message to those that are currently facing residential schools around the world, stressing the importance of telling their stories and not remaining silent.
