War Diary of 1st Battalion Canadian Scottish Regiment, Vol. 48, August 1, 1943 to August 31, 1943

The war diaries are official records kept by the Battalions during a one month period. They contain the daily orders, correspondence, newsletters, and an intelligence log detailing troop activities, locations, and weather conditions. The war diaries detail the activities and movement of the 1st Battalion from training in Canada and England to active duty on the Western Front and their return to Victoria in January 1946. This diary was kept while at Monk's Gate Common, England and Inverary, Scotland and focuses on the main body of the battalion after the rear party left for a separate exercise. It has entries about some officers attending the Allied Forces Athletic meeting held in White City Stadium in London, prepping for an All Ops training exercise and move, watching training films and news reels, travelling by train to Inverary, doing "hardening-up" training consisting of hill climbing, route marching, and cliff scaling before the main training starts, the pipe band getting new kilts, waterproofing their vehicles using a special asbestos compound, an assault landing exercise, a soldier dying after a shell exploded in his hut next to a fire with the results from the Court of Inquiry coming in next month's diary, travelling by ship to Ardrossan and seeing the S.S. Queen Mary sailing by, among other activities and information. Includes appendices covering orders, strength returns (daily & weekly), training syllabi, administrative memos, movement orders, tactical signs, and various exercises.
