Mentalism, Monthly Illustrated Occult Magazine, No. 12 (November 1907)

Public

“The Mentalism magazine was published in Moscow in 1906-1908 and 1911. The publication initiative belonged to Russia's first circle of mentalists, and the editor was Nikolai Borisovich Butovt, president of the circle of mentalists, author of the book "The Complete Course of Medical Magnetism and Vitaopathy". The journal included articles, both original and translated, devoted to the popular interpretation of the occult sciences. They cover such issues as mentalism, hypnotism, personal magnetism, therapeutic magnetism, phrenology, physiognomy, graphology, chirosophy and others.” -- translated description from a Russian auction house previously selling individual copies. "These are the equivalent to scientific articles, presented as ‘factually true’ wherein authors detail phenomena, provide research narratives, methodologies, anecdotal evidence and other reflections on occultism and mystical pseudo-science. It is similar to works by Alistair Crowley in England. It also possess a degree of medical and psychological relevance as some of the articles are related to the implementation of occult science in the curing or treatment of common maladies at the time. The founder/editor/publisher was Nikolai Borisovich Butovt (1860-1936) of the first circle of mentalists. The initial pieces in each issue indicate that they had been published in Moscow in the given year. However, the bound volume was likely printed in Minsk, Belarus which at the time was part of the Russian Empire." -- Dr. Tucker D. Farris
