- Tuesday Nov 17 Most critical day of Madrid fighting. Some of Franco's men across river, but Government strong on flanks. All headlines starring Franco's claims at expense of Government. O.K. sent Manchester Guardian with account of Italians in Majorca. Wrote to Deyá via Vives of Marsellia & Tio Pedro's cousin in Rome. Jenny & Martha Smith to lunch. Jenny tired, has rheumatics, & depressed by an attempt at blackmail re one of the a coloured trumpeter. Tap dancing overhead. Landlord sent a man who will complain. Cartographer came to make two maps for Troy . Laura going over list of geographical names with Karl & me. Photograph of Alice from Ward. Worked over Devil's Advice to Storyteller . John had an operation to his nose. (Lucy & her sister came).
