An interview/narrative of Vice Admiral Gary Garnett's experiences whilst serving with the Royal Canadian Navy. Interview took place on March 9, 2012.
ABSTRACT: Vadm Garnett discusses how he came to join the RCN and his family history with the forces. He describes his time as Carleton University where he met his wife followed by his navy training. He then discussed the fine points of the unification process and its faults followed by the changes he saw in the navy in that period. Vadm discussed his first command and the ships he served on as well as his time as part of Special Forces Team Ghana. Vadm Garnett’s numerous visits to the Soviet Union were discussed as well as how his educational background in Russian history helped him in these engagements. He also discussed his various positions in the RCN and what he has been doing since his retirement and his political feelings on Canada and America. 0:00-5:30-Where he was born, his university experience, meeting his wife and his initial naval training. 5:31-8:30- His first few positions and exchange position in the United Kingdom 8:31-17:00-His time spent in Ghana with the Commonwealth advisory team training Ghanaians. 17:01-33:00-His thoughts on unification and how it impacted his career 33:01-44:00- What did career wise during the 80’s and 90’s and how the RCN changed in that time 44:01-54:00- Garnett speaks of his visits to Russia and how his degree in Russian and Soviet history helped him in these trips. 54:01-1:18:40-Continuing discussion of changes and revamping in the 1980s and 1990s RCN and well as his experience in helping create a joint USN-RCN task force. 1:18:41-1:22:40- What positions he held in the 1980s and 1990s Tape 2 0:00-23:16-What Vadm Garnett has been doing since his retirement.
