ABSTRACT: Derek J. Norman Derek James Norman was born on December 19, 1949 in England. His family moved to Canada when he was seven. He enlisted in the Army in 1968 to be able to move away from home and developed close relationships with the men he was in training with. He became a medic and served with many different regiments, working hard to be accepted by making sure he did whatever the other men were doing. He served overseas on several peacekeeping missions, including in Doha, Qatar during Desert Storm and twice in Cyprus. He was posted in West Germany with NATO just prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall. He retired from the Regular Forces in 1993, but joined the Reserve Forces in 2002 and has been working full time in the Reserves since then, and will be discharged in December 2009. He considers his true friends to be those from the military.
