PublicABSTRACT: Major Charles Elsworth Goodman Goodman_C_0568_01.mp3 Family background - New Brunswick Cadets @ 12 Hunting with Uncle When war broke out in 1939 hoped it would last long enough for him to get into it - patriotism, financial Reserve Army training-radio systems, read flashing Morris code After 1 year with the St. John Fusiliers posted to Vancouver Island and needed signallers so he volunteered - social life not that great Changed his date of birth to read he was 19 not 16 Moved to New Westminster-only soldiers in town-also spent a period of time in Prince George Early 1944 needed reinforcements overseas-D-day was going to happen Battle school training under live fire Sailed to Scotland on the Empress of Scotland-worked in the galley during the voyage April 1944- Yorkshire- toughening camp marching 10- 25 miles per day D-Day happened but was not sent over to France until July 6 as 1st line reinforcements Equipment and provisions Describes first times experiences being among battle-surprised at who was frightened Fighting on South East side of Caen-heavy shelling-slit trenches Patrol-smell of battlefield Communicated with people at home Took a 2 day course about No. 18 set radio-best friend there so shared a slit trench-friend killed the next week Verriers Falaise- house to house fighting. Made their way up to Foret de la Londe- heavy casualties Crossed river into Rouen where there were lots of civilians 2nd Division parade at Dieppe From Dieppe to Belgian French border-marched to Nieuwpoort which they liberated Moved up to Nijmegen spend winter there Stayed in Holland after war with Occupational Forces (3rd Division) - guarding naval ships
