War Diary of 1st Battalion Canadian Scottish Regiment, Vol. 72, August 1, 1945 to August 31, 1945

Public

The war diaries are official records kept by the Battalions during a one month period. They contain the daily orders, correspondence, newsletters, and an intelligence log detailing troop activities, locations, and weather conditions. The war diaries detail the activities and movement of the 1st Battalion from training in Canada and England to active duty on the Western Front and their return to Victoria in January 1946. This diary was kept while at Ede, Holland. It has entries about a visit from Major-General R.H. Keefler who inspected the Battalion and observed some of the educational classes, the Battalion participating in the First Canadian Army Sports Meet held at the Maple Leaf Stadium in Nijmegen, Padre Seaborn leaving to be the Chaplain at the Khaki College, continuing the educational, recreational and work party programs, being informed that the whole Battalion would most likely leave Europe before Christmas with the delay due to the amount of shipping available to the Canadian Army, remembering that August 14 was the one year anniversary of when they were bombed by friendly fire from the R.A.F., inspecting one of the larger industrial sites in Utrecht as a part of the educational program, leaves to leave centres and the United Kingdom continuing with a large portion of the Battalion being away at all times, remembering the anniversary of the Battle of Hill 168 on August 15 where the Battalion paid dearly to advance 1500 yards leading to the fall of Falaise the next day, the situation with the Dutch currency being uncertain so restrictions on money orders for cigarettes etc. was restricted, discontinuing mail censorship, August 16 being officially declared V-J-Day and a holiday, the first issue of a new Sports New Publication by Lt. J.L. Eddy coming out, practicing for the Ceremonial Parade to be held on the 31st for the birthday of Queen Wilhelmina, every available man in the Battalion marching through Ede with the pipe band through heavy rain, and then taking part in the celebrations in Ede, among other activities and information. Includes appendices covering orders, nominal roll of honours and awards to personnel of 1 C Scot R., a memo regarding the formation of a boxing team, telegrams, and the first edition of the "The Sports Officer Says" newsletter dated August 24, 1945.
