- Ap 12 Wed. Léonie is secretly engaged to the commis at the farm 'Montague's negro' so Anita won't engage her for a few months only. Anita keeps on 'phoning for reassurance about the War: this is another Crisis time – French troops called up, Germans massing on various frontiers etc. Woodpecker going all day. Proofs. Very hot weather. Dorothy has made a wand for Tom (oak, with a knot-hole) & round objects for Julie & Katharine, each, out of bark of a rotten oak branch, & a hornbeam heart-shaped thing for Laura.
