The main theme of the novel according to Dickens's preface is selfishness, portrayed in a satirical fashion using all the members of the Chuzzlewit family. Dickens introduced the first private detective character in this novel. The original parts issued from January 1843 to July 1844. Chapters 4-5: Chapter 4. From which it will appear that if union be strength, and family affection be pleasant to contemplate, the Chuzzlewits were the strongest and most agreeable family in the world -- Chapter 5.
