Drum and bell in the Tam Kung Temple

Drum and bell in the Tam Kung Temple. On the ground beside the drum stand is a small altar for Zao Jun (灶君, the Kitchen God). Zao Jun, also called Zao Shen (灶神), is very important in Chinese folk culture. It is believed that before the Chinese New Year he returns to heaven to report the activities of every household over the past year to the emperor of Heaven. The emperor either rewards or punishes a family based on Zao Jun's report. Photo taken on May 9, 2012.
