- Aug 31 Sat. To village for sugar & to find lost watch (no go) But apples, mangettas monjetas (meat &) half a marrow. Boiled up the jelly: made 20 lb or more, very sharp, like black red currant, & very stiff. Some to Strenge, Karl & Isabel's mother. Put up notice of loss of watch. Almost Forgotten Times [Chapter] XVIII Sent that letter to Liddell Hart. First yellow fig from grotto. First melon of the large green kind. Smuggling reign of terror. Special judge. i I n a few days all ring leaders put in prison — bail for 300,000 pesetas — including Mayor of Felanitx & Miguel of Bar Ritz, & one from Bar Formentor & one from [Café] Born. Head of tobacco company released on bail of 25,000 then arrested: bail demanded was then 200,000. (Also stern round up of passportless foreigners.) Heavy prison sentences.
