Letter from Walter Shewring to Herbert Read, March 12, 1963
PublicPart of a collection of letters to Sir Herbert Read from Walter Shewring. Shewring is most well known for his translation of Homer’s “Odyssey”, but in addition to translating, he also wrote essays and poetry. In this letter, Shewring gives his sympathies for Read's slipped disc, and describes his sister's experience with the same. He expresses his thoughts about Read's most recent book, and his criticism of some of the negative reviews it received. In this letter Shewring also requests Read's help to sell three paintings, two by Stanley Spencer and one by Gilbert Spencer, in order to purchase a sculpture by Eric Gill for the E. G. Collection. He describes one of the paintings as a variant of "'John Donne Arriving in Heaven' (1911)".
